Teaching Capability Framework

At Deakin, we recognise that enhancing the capabilities of our teaching teams is one of the most important ways we can ensure a high-quality experience for our learners. The Deakin Teaching Capability Framework is designed to guide capability development of staff whose roles contribute to teaching and learning at Deakin.

The framework recognises four key professional domains of teaching and learning that encompass both academic and professional roles.

The dimensions of the framework have been articulated for the four professional domains. Choose the domain that is most relevant to your context. You may find that your practice operates across more than one of the domains. The practices identified are not exhaustive and not everyone will engage in all the practices shown in the framework.

Select the relevant domain to see the relevant framework for that context.

The framework articulates the central capacities that are important for staff in each of the four professional domains: Professional Values, Core Knowledge and Areas of Activity. This framework will help us to identify and articulate good practice in learning and teaching, and will drive our professional learning activities. Each of the values, core knowledge and activities are aligned to the Deakin Design Principles and Practices which represent a practice-led and evidence-informed approach to the design and delivery of teaching, learning, assessment and feedback activities at Deakin.

Who is the framework for?

At Deakin, teaching and supporting learning is a collaborative, multidisciplinary activity undertaken by those who design, deliver, enable and lead learning and teaching, in both academic and professional roles. The following overview shows some of these roles and the professional domain in which they may work, recognising that many staff work across a range of domains. When you are using the Teaching Capability Framework, you can choose the domain or domains that are most relevant for your context.

What are the range of capabilities required for effective practice in teaching and learning support?

The Teaching Capability Framework describes fifteen capabilities aligned to the DeakinDesign Principles and Practice and the Professional Standards Framework (2023). These capabilities outline how we act, what we need to know, and what we do to ensure effective practice in teaching and learning support within our context at Deakin.

identify strengths and capabilities that could be further
developed
