Inclusive Teaching Toolkit
The Deakin Principles of Inclusive Education have been developed in consultation with the Deakin Teaching and Learning community and inform how we design, deliver, enable and lead teaching and learning at Deakin University. These nine principles inform how we approach course design, teaching practice, assessment, feedback, learner support and reflection on our practice, to ensure equity of opportunity for all learners.
Embrace learner diversity
Individual and diverse perspectives of our learners are valued and enrich our learning.
Provide accessible resources and environments
Learning resources, experiences and spaces are accessible to all learners to allow equity of opportunity for all to reach their potential.
Design flexible learning experiences
Our curriculum is designed to enable learners to build knowledge and develop skills in multiple and flexible ways.
Represent diversity in the curriculum
Our learning resources and experiences reflect the diversity of our learners and our community.
Scaffold knowledge and skills
Learning activities and resources are scaffolded to support learners to develop knowledge and skills over time.
Build a community of learners
All learners are welcomed and supported as part of a respectful, vibrant learning community.
Assess equitably
Assessment activities allow all learners to show they can meet the learning outcomes.
Provide effective feedback
Feedback is constructive, personalised, specific, accurate, and criterion-referenced, designed to support learning.
Reflect on and evaluate practice
Teachers evaluate and reflect on their practice to ensure equity of opportunity for all.
The Deakin Inclusive Teaching Toolkit offers ideas, strategies, suggestions and practical examples to assist you in being more Inclusive in your teaching practice. It is designed to give you “just-in-time” resources to help you to recognise and support diversity in your classes, and to promote equity of opportunity for all your learners to reach their potential.
