Teaching Capability Framework

Why do we need a Teaching Capability Framework?

At Deakin, we recognise that enhancing the capabilities of our teaching and learning staff is one of the most important ways we can ensure a high quality experience for our students. This plan highlights a range of individual capabilities of staff in the four key domains in learning and teaching activity – designing, delivering, enabling and leading.

The framework:

  • articulates the areas of activity, core knowledge and professional values of teaching and learning staff in these domains,
  • directs staff to opportunities to further develop their capabilities and
  • clearly articulates opportunities to gain recognition through the Deakin HEA Fellowship program. This framework is unique in that it brings together an international framework (UK Professional Standards Framework) with Deakin’s Curriculum Framework and promotion criteria, and articulates these for both academic and professional roles, who work collaboratively at Deakin to deliver our Learning Promise.

Who is the framework for?

Teaching at Deakin is a collaborative, multidisciplinary activity and this framework is unique in that it recognises all staff contributing to teaching and learning at Deakin including those who design, deliver, enable and lead learning and teaching at Deakin, in both academic and professional roles. This table shows a range of these roles and the domain in which they work. Many staff work across a range of domains. This list is not exhaustive and not all staff will engage in all activities.
