Respondus

Respondus allows you to create and manage quizzes offline and then publish them directly to CloudDeakin.

Install Respondus

Mac users: Respondus is a windows-based application and will not run on an Apple Macintosh.

  1. You will need to download the latest version of Respondus from Software Catalogue.
  2. Once Respondus is installed, you will need to select the correct ‘personality’:
  3. Click on the Start tab at the top of the main window.
  4. Select D2L Brightspace from the Current Personality drop-down list.

Note: You will not be able to publish your quiz to CloudDeakin if you choose another personality.

Create a quiz

  1. Click on the Start tab at the top of the main window.
  2. Click on the Create button.
  3. In the Create New File window:
    1. Type a title for the quiz in the Name of File field.
    2. Type a description for the quiz in the Description field.
    3. Select the type of file – Exam or Survey.
    4. Click OK.
  4. This will open the Edit tab
  5. To add a question:
    • Select the type of question you wish to add from the nine tabs at the left of the main window: Multiple Choice, True or False, Long Answer, Matching, Short Answer, Multiple-Select, Ordering, Fill in the Blanks, Arithmetic.
    • For example, click on the Multiple Choice tab.
      1. Type a title for the quiz in the Title of question field.
      2. Type the question in the Question Wording field.
      3. Type the answers in the Answers field.
      4. Select the correct answer from the Select Correct Answer drop-down list.
    • To create most of the question types is relatively straightforward, but the Arithmetic question option is more complicated. For instructions, click on the Help link in Respondus, choose Search and type in Arithmetic.
    • If required, select Enable Feedback under the list of question types on the left side of the screen. The General Feedback button will appear above the Answers field, and specific feedback fields, indicated by an f, will appear
      below each answer.
    • To provide general feedback:
      1. Click on the General Feedback button to provide feedback on the overall question. The General feedback window will appear.
      2. Type in your feedback and when finished close the window.
    • To provide specific feedback:
      1. Type in the feedback in the f field under each answer.
      2. Click on the Preview button. When finished, click OK.
      3. Click on the Add to End of List button.
  6. Repeat Step 5 to add remaining questions:
    • To place the new question before an existing question in the Question List:
      1. Click on the Insert into List button.
      2. The Insert into List window appears.
      3. Type the question number before which you wish to add the new question.
      4. Click OK
    • To edit a question:
      1. Click on the Title of the question in the Question List at the bottom of the main window.
      2. Click on the Modify button.
      3. This will take you to the Edit tab.
      4. Make the necessary changes.
      5. Click on the Save Changes button.
  7. Click File at the top-left corner of the window.
  8. Click Save. This will automatically save the document in the Respondus program folder. To change the folder to which files are saved:
    1. Click File
    2. Click Preferences
    3. Click on the General tab.
    4. Click on the Update button.
    5. Select your required folder
    6. Click OK.

Note: Go to the Publish a Quiz from Respondus to CloudDeakin section for information on how to export your quiz to CloudDeakin.

Note: It is best to adjust the settings for the quiz directly from CloudDeakin, once you have exported the quiz to your relevant unit.

Preview and edit a quiz

  1. If the file you wish to preview is not already open:
    1. Click on the Start tab at the top of the main window.
    2. Click on the Open button.
    3. Click on the Name of the quiz.
    4. Click Open
    5. The quiz will open in the Edit tab.
      Note: The name of the opened quiz will appear in the top-left corner of the window.
  2. Click on the Preview & Publish tab at the top of the main window.
  3. Click Preview tab at the left of the main window.
  4. Click on the Preview the File button.
  5. Click on the Next >> and Prev << buttons as required to scroll through all questions.
  6. To edit a question:
    1. Click on the Modify Item button.
    2. This will take you to the Edit tab.
    3. Make the necessary changes.
    4. Click on the Save Changes button.
  7. When finished, click on the Close button.

Print a quiz

  1. If the file you wish to print is not already open:
    1. Click on the Start tab at the top of the main window.
    2. Click on the Open button.
    3. Click on the Name of the quiz.
    4. Click Open.
    5. The quiz will open in the Edit tab.
      Note: The name of the opened quiz will appear in the top-left corner of the window.
  2. Click on the Preview & Publish tab at the top of the main window.
  3. Click Print Options tab at the left of the main window.
  4. Select the format you wish to print in.
  5. Click on the corresponding Settings button.
  6. The Printing Options window will open. Select between the available options.
  7. Click OK.
  8. To preview before printing, click on the Print Preview button. Click OK when finished.
  9. To save, click on the Save to File button. This will allow you to format the quiz further using a word processor.
  10. To print, click on the Send to Printer button.
  11. Select the desired printer and click OK.

Create question in standard format

Note: For details on .csv file standard format, click on the Help link in Respondus, choose Search and type in Import csv files.

  1. Open your preferred word processing program.
  2. For all question types, each question must commence with a question number, followed by a full stop or a close parentheses and at least one space, then the question wording. 1) Who was the first Prime Minister of Australia?
  3. If required, a title for each question can be inserted by typing Title followed immediately by a colon and a space and then the title wording, on the line above the question wording.Title: First Prime Minister1) Who was the first Prime Minister of Australia?
  4. The rules of standard format then differ depending on the type of question being created, see examples below.
  5. Once you have finished creating your file of questions, Save it as a Word (.doc), rich text (.rtf) or plain text (.txt) file so that it is ready to be imported.

Note: Answers will be ignored if you are importing the questions into a survey.

Examples of standard format:

Multiple choice questions (one correct answer)

Each answer choice must begin with a letter followed by a full stop or a close parentheses. The letter for the correct answer should be immediately proceeded by an asterisk.

Title: First Prime Minister
1) Who was the first Prime Minister of Australia?
a. John Howard
b. Alfred Deakin
*c. Sir Edmund Barton

Feedback

Feedback for individual answer choices can be inserted by placing the feedback on the line under the answer and preceding it with an @ and a space. General feedback for the overall question can be provided in a similar way by placing the feedback on the line under the question and again preceding it with an @ and a space.

Title: First Prime Minister
1) Who was the first Prime Minister of Australia?
@ Sir Edmund Barton was the First Prime Minister of Australia and is also said to be the father of Federation.
a. John Howard
@ John Howard is the current Prime Minister
b. Alfred Deakin
@ Alfred Deakin was the second Prime Minister of Australia

Multiple choice questions (multiple correct answers)

Type Type: MR as the first line. This is followed, on subsequent lines, by the Title, if required, the question number, question wording and answer choices in a similar format to that above. Feedback can also be included as for one correct answer multiple choice questions above. All correct answers should be immediately proceeded by an asterisk.

True/false questions

Answer choices must be presented in a similar format to that for multiple choice questions, with True or T as the first answer choice followed by False or F, in order for Respondus to recognise it as a true/false question. Feedback can also be included as for multiple choice questions.

3) Alfred Deakin was the first Prime Minister of Australia.
@ Sir Edmund Barton was the First Prime Minister of Australia. Alfred Deakin was the second.

Written questions

Type Type: P as the first line. This is followed, on subsequent lines, by the Title, if required, the question number, question wording and sample answer, in a similar format as for multiple choice questions.

4) In terms of Australian political history, who was Sir Edmund Barton?
@Sir Edmund Barton is said to be the father of Federation and was the first Prime Minister of Australia.

Short answer questions

Type Type: S as the first line. This is followed, on subsequent lines, by the Title, if required, the question number, and question wording. Respondus will allow you to import only one correct answer, but will allow you to enter multiple forms of that answer.

5) Who was Australia’s first Prime Minister?

Matching questions

Type Type: MT as the first line. This is followed, on subsequent lines, by the Title, if required, the question number, and question wording. Each answer must begin with a letter, followed by a full stop or a close parentheses. The two parts of the match must be separated by an equals sign with a space either side. There should not be any hard breaks or blank lines within either parts of the answer.

Type: MT
Title: Prime Ministers of Australia
6) Match the correct name and order in which they served as Prime Minister.
a. Sir George Reid = Fourth
b. Edmund Barton = First
c. Alfred Deakin = Second
d. John Watson = Third

Import questions

Note: the file to be imported must be in a ‘standard format’.

  1. If you wish to import content into an existing quiz, you will need to open it before proceeding:
    1. Click on the Start tab at the top of the main window.
    2. Click on the Open
    3. Click on the Name of the quiz.
    4. Click Open.
    5. The quiz will open in the Edit

      Note:the name of the opened quiz will appear in the top-left corner of the window.

  2. Click on the Start tab at the top of the main window.
  3. Click on the Import Questions
  4. In the Import Questions window:
    • Select the type of file you wish to import from the Type of file drop-down list.
    • Click on the top Browse Go to and click on the Title of the file that you wish to import. Click Open.
    • Choose where you want to add the new questions (step 2):
      1. To import questions into an exiting quiz that you have opened, select Append the questions to the current document.
      2. To create a new quiz select Create a new document, named and type a title for a new quiz.
    • Select the Type of file to create – either survey or exam.
    • If required, select the check box for Use “stem” plus question number to create title and type the required “stem” in the available field. For example: type Question. This will provide a title for the question if you haven’t already provided one, by using the stem chosen and consecutive numbers. For example: Question-001, Question-002.
    • Click Preview.
    • View any Warnings and Notes at the bottom of the window.
    • Click Finish.
  5. The file will open in the Edit

Note: It is best to adjust the settings for the quiz directly in CloudDeakin once you have exported the quiz to your unit.

Publishing quizzes CloudDeakin

When publishing from Respondus to CloudDeakin, you should be logged into both the CloudDeakin section and Respondus with your individual username (not a Group Administrator username). If you have Group Administrator access attached to your username then you could encounter long delays when connecting to CloudDeakin from Respondus, and may have to remove this access to use Respondus effectively.

Note: You must have an existing quiz within Respondus in order to publish it.

  1. If the file you wish to export is not already open:
    • Click on the Start tab at the top of the main window.
    • Click on the Open
    • Click on the Name of the quiz you wish to export.
    • Click Open.
    • The quiz will open in the Edit tabNote: The name of the opened quiz will appear in the top-left corner of the window.
  2. Click on the Preview & Publish tab at the top of the main window.
  3. Click Publish tab at the left of the main window.
  4. Then, click on Publish Wizard.
  5. Click Publish to single course at the left of the main window.
  6. Under the Brightspace Server:
    • If you have already added a server for CloudDeakin, select an existing server from the Desire2Learn Server drop-down list.
    • If you have not added a server for CloudDeakin, select add new server from the drop-down list. When the new window opens, click on the circle next to No, I want to enter the server settings manually and then click Next.
    • The Desire2Learn Server Information window appears.
    • Type https://d2l.deakin.edu.au into the address field (step 2).
    • Click Extract >>. The web address will appear in the server Domain and Server Port.
    • Type a title for this connection, for example ‘CloudDeakin’, in the Description 
    • Type your user name and password in the User name and Password
    • If appropriate, select the check box next to Remember my User Name and Password. Note: If you are using a shared computer it is advisable that you do not check this box. If you check this box note that you will need to change your User Name and Password when you change your network User Name and Password
    • Click OK.
    • Click on the Next > button to connect to the server.
    • If you did not elect to save your user name and password, you may be asked to type them in the User name and Password fields in the new window that appears. When finished, click OK.
    • Select the name of the unit to which you wish to add the quiz from the Choose Course to Publish to drop-down list.
    • Select or create a New Quiz from the Create/Replacement Assessment Type Menu
    • Select the required options to create or update your quiz or self test.
    • Click Next > to publish the quiz to the server.
  7. When the words Completed successfully appear, click on the Finish 
  8. The quiz will now appear in the quizzes list in your chosen CloudDeakin unit.
  9. Navigate to your chosen CloudDeakin unit and click on the Quizzes. You should see the quizzes that you have just published. Note: Remember to adjust the properties for the quizzes.
