Teaching & Learning
HEA Fellowships enable educators at all career-stages to reflect on their learning and teaching and consolidate their professional development, achieve recognition and become part of a global community of more than 140,000 fellows. These Fellowships are an international recognition of a commitment by individuals and institutions to prioritising teaching and learning in higher education.
There are four categories of Fellowship indicative of different experience and roles found within a higher education context: Associate Fellowship, Fellowship, Senior Fellowship and Principal Fellowship.
HEA Fellowship is aligned with the 2011 Professional Standards Framework (PSF) that incorporates five areas of activity, six aspects of core knowledge and four professional values. This framework has been mapped to Deakin’s Principles for Premium Learning and Teaching, to teaching team, unit chair and program leader roles and to Deakin’s academic promotion criteria for teaching.
Advance HE cites some of the benefits of fellowship:
- Consolidates personal development and evidence of professional practice in your higher education career
- Provides a valuable measure of success and is increasingly recognised by international institutions
- Demonstrates commitment to teaching, learning and the student experience, through engagement in a practical process that encourages research, reflection and development;
- Fellowship is increasingly sought by employers across the education sector as a condition of appointment and promotion
- For individuals, to identify their expertise with the entitlement to use post-nominal letters (AFHEA, FHEA, SFHEA, PFHEA)
- Provides institutional assurance that Fellowships are an important indicator that your institution is fully aligned with Professional Standards Framework (PSF) practice and a badge of assured quality throughout your institution.
Fellowship programs can be embedded within an institution (as Deakin is) or alternatively, individuals can apply for Fellowship directly through Advance HE My Academy. In either case, while the funding and costs involved differ, individuals will still be acknowledged as HEA Fellows.
HEA Fellowship is not exclusive or competitive. The program is designed to be inclusive of professional and academic staff. The scheme is focused on reflective practice and demonstration of professional experience in teaching and learning.
Beckmann (2016) outlines some of the history of HEA Fellowship coming to Australia: ‘In 2014, an Australian university tried a new strategy, introducing an international scheme with the potential to recognise all staff who can demonstrate appropriate professional experience and effective engagement in university teaching and support of learners. Within 30 months, more than 400 academic and professional staff—from that university and from other Australasian institutions that sought involvement—had made successful applications for recognition under this scheme’. (p. 13)
Myatt & Williams (2018) found university educators took up Fellowship for a variety of reason:
- Staff wanted to learn and be reflective
- Recognition for learning & teaching was a motivator
- Staff hoped to gain professional learning
- Skills, networks and mentoring were sought
- The scheme changed the way staff thought about their practice, increased their confidence and provided evidence for career advancement.
The DeakinHE Fellowship program for 2020
The DeakinHE Fellowship program is an accredited and internationally recognised professional recognition and professional development program that supports Deakin staff with teaching and learning experience.
Participation costs are covered by Deakin University. To be eligible you must be a Deakin staff member and have been teaching, or supporting teaching, in Higher Education for a minimum of two years.
The fellowship involves attendance at two writing workshops and writing a reflective narrative about your teaching experience.
The DeakinHE Fellowship Round 1 information sessions will be held on Tuesday 14 July 2020 at 10am or Wednesday 29 July 2020 at 11am. See the information brochure here.
